Course Aim

This course aims to equip candidates with the skills and understanding to operate Mowers in a safe and efficient manner.

To achieve this qualification the candidate must be able to drive accurately and manoeuvre the mower safely and skillfully.

Course Objectives

Unit 1 (Pre-Use Safety)

After completing the course the successful Candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge and ability in Pre Use Safety and will be able to:

• Identify any hazards specific to the site, task and machine
• Carry out pre-start checks to the power unit and attachments, including Statutory guarding requirements
• Demonstrate knowledge of safe re-fuelling and safety procedures
• Understand fuel storage and transportation requirements
• Identify and explain the function of instruments, controls and safety decals

Unit 2 (Operate a Mower)

After completing the course the successful Candidate will be able to
Either: Cylinder Mowers, Rotary Mowers, Flail Mowers or Reciprocating Knife Mower

• Carry out pre-work settings and adjustments to the mower
• Comment on condition of cutting mechanism and demonstrate knowledge of cutting procedures
• Remove /refit and sharpen blades
• Test Start Mower, safely mover mower to the working area and operate mower
• Demonstrate knowledge of factors to consider when cleaning, inspection and leaving work areas tidy
• Candidates are encouraged where possible to take their assessments with multiple cutting mechanisms to broaden their certification

Certification & Assessment

Assessment

The candidates are assessed on observation of practical performance and underpinning knowledge. The certificate will be endorsed in the context of Pedestrian Controlled, Tractor Mounted or Self Propelled (Ride –on) Mower with the relevant type of cutting mechanism
